Biota Seale’s Cardinalfish (Ostorhinchus sealei)
The Seale’s cardinalfish (Ostorhinchus sealei) is typically unavailable in the aquarium fish trade. That notwithstanding, these shoaling cardinalfish get along well in small groups and are a beautiful, reef-safe and unusual addition to any peaceful community marine aquarium. Juveniles have a bright yellow body with blue eyes and black stripes; adults develop a lime green body while the striping turns into a more reddish color. The Seale’s cardinalfish stands apart from most other cardinals in that it frequently swims in the open water in aquariums!

Seale’s Cardinalfish Species Information
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific Ocean from Malaysia and the Solomon Islands to southern Japan to Australia. It is reef-associated, inhabiting depths of 3-25 meters (rarely deeper than 10 meters). An uncommon species, it may be found in small to large groups among branching corals on sheltered lagoon reefs.
The Benefits of Captive-Bred Cardinalfish
Captive-bred livestock offers a huge advantage over wild-caught specimens. Because they are cultured in captivity, these animals are better adapted to living in an aquarium, tend to be more disease resistant and are easier to feed. They are also better able to handle shipping/acclimation stress. By purchasing captive-bred Seale’s cardinalfish, you are supporting the aquaculture of marine organisms and helping to make our hobby more sustainable!
