Description
Biota Bird’s Nest Coral (Seriatopora sp.)
Seriatopora is among the hardiest and fastest-growing of SPS corals. It is widely regarded as a great first SPS to keep. Nevertheless, it can be a little tricky until it “settles in” and adapts to the new aquarium environment. It adapts much more easily to stable, fully mature systems.
This genus appreciates stronger water flow; indeed, as it grows to form a dense but intricate bird’s nest-like structure, it requires increasingly stronger flow to reach the polyps in the mid parts. Similarly, while Seriatopora tolerates modest light levels, increasingly stronger illumination is required as the colony grows. Stronger lighting additionally promotes richer coloration. Bird’s nests are fairly fragile and tend to break during transport, handling, etc.; fortunately, these fragments are easily glued to the hardscape (generally top or middle sections) to establish new colonies!

Biota Bird’s Nest Coral Species Information
Seriatopora sp. inhabit shallow tropical coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific region (e.g. Solomon Islands, Fiji and the Great Barrier Reef). These adaptable stony corals inhabit a variety of water depths; water depth has a significant influence on the coral’s appearance, including form (e.g. branch thickness) as well as coloration.
The Benefits of Farmed Biota Seriatopora sp.
Captive-bred livestock offers a huge advantage over wild-caught specimens. Because it is cultured in captivity, it is better adapted to living in an aquarium, tends to be more disease resistant and harbors fewer pests. It is also better able to handle shipping/acclimation stress! By purchasing captive-bred Bird’s nest corals, you support the aquaculture of marine organisms and help to make our hobby more sustainable.
