Biota Green Plate Coral (Fungia sp.)
While the green plate coral is generally hardy in captivity, tank propagated specimens such as these offer the best chances of success for the beginning reef aquarist. Its flashy green color is sure to impress, particularly under actinic lighting. Considerable care should be taken when handling this physically delicate animal. It prefers moderate lighting and moderate water flow. It is capable of stinging and thereby damaging neighboring corals, so it should be afforded plenty of space. This solitary-polyp LPS can “puff” itself up to double its size. Thus, it should not be placed on the hardscape as it can fall off while inflated. Rather, it does best (and looks best) when it is resting over the sand bed.
Plate corals can be cut in half to produce two new individual corals. Progeny may also be produced if the coral is severely damaged, whereby tiny new polyps emerge from the skeleton (called “polyp bailout”) and settle on the surrounding sand bed. See below for more information.

Biota Green Plate Coral Species Information
Plate corals occur across the Indo-Pacific region from Indonesia to the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Australia. Solitary Fungia sp. are found living over reef rubble zones. It may inflate to both increase exposure to sunlight light or to shed sand cover. While found in areas of moderate currents, it tolerates stronger flow. Despite harboring symbiotic algae, this coral can capture and consume small, meaty prey.
The Benefits of Farmed Biota Fungia sp.
Captive-bred livestock is preferable to wild-caught stock. Because it is cultured in captivity, it is better adapted to living in an aquarium, being more disease resistant and harboring fewer pests. It is also better able to handle shipping/acclimation stress! By purchasing captive-bred green plate corals, you support the aquaculture of marine organisms and help to make our hobby more sustainable.
