Description
Biota Squamosa Clam (Tridacna squamosa)
Tridacna squamosa is prized for its wildly fluted shell. This spectacular mollusk does well in higher light levels. These clams are suitable for beginner aquarists since they grow quickly and are relatively hardy. While they absolutely depend upon bright light for their survival, their growth and health may be enhanced with the regular use of live phytoplankton such as OceanMagik. These farmed specimens have a very dark background overlaid with bold lavender to rich, golden blotches.

Squamosa Clam Species Information
Tridacna squamosa occurs throughout the South Pacific and Indian Oceans (South Africa to the Red Sea and the Marshall Islands.). It prefers brightly sunlit habitats where it sometimes attaches to hard substrates but typically lies freely over the sand. It’s dependence on intense light arises from it’s dependence on an endosymbiotic dinoflagellate; to a lesser extent, it obtains food from filter-feeding.
The Benefits of Farmed Squamosa Clams
Captive-bred livestock offers a huge advantage over wild-caught specimens. Because they are cultured in captivity, these animals are better adapted to living in an aquarium and tend to be more disease resistant. They are also better able to handle shipping/acclimation stress. By purchasing captive-bred Tridacna squamosa, you are supporting the aquaculture of marine organisms and helping to make our hobby more sustainable!
