ORA Duncan (Duncanopsammia)
For long a favorite LPS coral amongst aquarium hobbyists, Duncanopsammia spp. is a well-known and highly sought-after genus from Australia. It can develop into highly branched colonies that have an exotic, primordial reef look. While “duncans” very much look like Tubastrea spp. (sun corals), they are photosynthetic and do not require feeding (though they certainly appreciate a meaty treat from time to time). It can emit a stunning fluorescent green glow, which varies somewhat under different lighting (it fluoresces the most under actinic lights). The ORA Duncan (Duncanopsammia) already has garnered a rich history and in fact originates from a frag of the colony immortalized on the cover of The Reef Aquarium, Volume 1 (Delbeek and Sprung 1994). This strain is an especially fast grower with branches that form dense clusters (in contrast to the more slender branches of currently imported specimens). Better yet, these farmed specimens are comparatively hardy and adaptable. It prefers a middle-top tank placement under medium-high light intensity and moderate-strong water flow.

The Benefits of Farmed Duncan (Duncanopsammia) corals
Because they are cultured in under aquarium conditions, captive-bred corals offer significant advantages over wild-caught specimens. They tend to be more disease resistant, harbor fewer pests and are much more capable of handling shipping/acclimation stress! By purchasing captive-bred duncans, you support the aquaculture of marine organisms and help to make our hobby more sustainable.
