Biota Orange Plate Coral (Fungia sp.)
The orange plate coral is generally hardy in captivity; still, tank propagated specimens such as these offer the best chances of success for beginning reef aquarium hobbyists. Considerable care should be taken when handling this physically delicate animal. It prefers moderate lighting and moderate water flow. It is capable of stinging and thereby damaging neighboring corals, so it should be given plenty of living space. These LPS corals can inflate themselves up to twice their deflated size. Thus, they should not be placed on the hardscape as they may fall off while puffed up. These corals indeed look their best while resting over the sand bed. This super-bright orange strain is really something to behold!
Plate corals are carefully cut in half to produce two new individual corals. Progeny may also be produced if the coral is severely damaged, whereby tiny new polyps emerge from the skeleton and settle on the surrounding substrate. See below for more information.

Biota Orange Plate Coral Species Information
Plate corals occur across the Indo-Pacific region from Indonesia to the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Australia. Solitary Fungia sp. are found living on reef rubble bottoms. They may inflate either to increase exposure to sunlight light or to cast away sediments. While they are typically found in areas of moderate currents, they tolerate stronger flow. Despite harboring symbiotic algae, they can capture and consume small, meaty prey.
The Benefits of Farmed Biota Fungia sp.
Captive-bred corals are preferable to wild-caught stock. Cultured in captivity, they are better adapted to living in an aquarium, being more disease resistant and harboring fewer pests. They also are better able to handle shipping/acclimation stress. By purchasing captive-bred orange plate corals, you support the aquaculture of marine organisms and help to make our hobby more sustainable!
