REFUGE RESIN: ORGANIC SCAVENGING RESIN

Description

REFUGE RESIN is a synthetic porous macropolymer resin bead that adsorbs dissolved organics from your marine aquarium water. This will help clarify the water and turn yellowed water, high in dissolved organics, back to its clear state. The porous nature of the resin bead provides numerous reaction sites for dissolved organics to bind with the surface of the resin.

 Why Remove dissolved organics 

Dissolved organics cause the aquarium water to yellow, giving the water an unappealing hue that significantly reduces light transmission through the water column. High levels of dissolved organics can serve as a carbon source for bacteria. These bacterial levels can reach such high levels that the water appears to have a hazy look or rocks can appear covered in a biofilm. Due to their rapid growth, the bacteria can consume significant amounts of dissolved oxygen, stealing precious oxygen from your aquarium inhabitants including your fish, coral, and invertebrates.

 How to test for Dissolved organic carbon 

A quick method to determine if dissolved organics are present at high levels in the aquarium is the white bucket test. The ideal time to perform the white bucket test is when you perform a water change. When removing water from the aquarium, fill a white bucket with the wastewater. Be sure there is sufficient white lighting in the area, typical lighting used in a household is fine. Please note, pure blue light from your aquarium may hide the hue. Compare it to a bucket of fresh mixed saltwater, in a different white bucket.

 Use Instructions: 

We recommend using this item in a fine mesh filter bag, not currently included; a mesh size of 180 Microns will work well. Do not add beads to the aquarium without keeping them within a mesh or felt bag. Place in a medium flow zone. This item may be used in a reactor, tumbling, or packed bed. Due to the small resin bead size, we recommend having a sponge or cloth filter membrane to prevent the media from escaping the chamber. Refuge Resin gradually darkens as it becomes depleted and can be easily revitalized by using bleach.  Refuge resin is suitable for both saltwater and freshwater applications.
